Searching Strategies

EBVOnline Search Engine: Remember to use the search engine on this page to look for items within the EBVOnline website! If you can't find what you need in these pre-selected links, then try one of the search engines below!

Search Engines: General Internet search engines (linked below) are free programs on the Internet. They are provided by companies (and paid for by advertising dollars) to help people find web pages with specific content.

Computer Access for Search Engines:  Search engines can be accessed from any computer by typing the search engine's URL into the address bar of the browser or clicking on the search engine in this  page.

WebTV Access for Search Engines: WebTV by pressing the "Option" button and selecting "Go To" on the remote keyboard. The search engine at the top of the EBVOnline Homepage searches the entire EBVOnline website for any word. The search engines listed below search the entire Internet for the words.

Think about your search: Before you start searching, think about the many ways to name the search item.

Use Help! Before using a search engine, always read the "help."

Some of the most common search engines include:

  • www.google.com ranks results by the number of other sites that link to it.
  • http://www.av.com (Altavista) I think this one is the best! You can type your question into the search box or use one of the following techniques to find a closer match to your question.

  • use + (plus sign) to include or - (minus sign) to exclude a word
  • use a "word phrase" in quotation marks to find those words together
  • use the AV Filter to find pictures or photographs
  • always use small letters because it will find small and capital letters. If you use capital letters in the search it will not find the the same words in small letters.

For kids: http://www.ajkids.com (Ask Jeeves for kids)
With this search engine you ask questions in every day language.

PC Magazine's Your Complete Guide to Searching the Internet is a comprehensive site for this topic.
